Summer Treats!

Posted on: June 11th, 2012 by designdesign

With summer creeping around the corner, I’m sure the same thing is on everyone’s mind. This may be the beach or a killer suntan, however the main thing that comes to my mind is that creamy, frosty, delectable treat that goes by the names ice cream, or gelato, or even custard.

Located a few blocks from DesignDesign is a local homemade Ice Cream Shoppe called La Michoacana. Here they offer over 50 various exotic flavors to satisfy anyone’s individual preference. Rotated on a weekly basis, the flavors range from corn (sprinkled with your choice of cinnamon or chile), rice pudding, avocado, tamarind, cheesecake, and eggnog to name a few.  If La Michoacana does not carry a flavor you have in mind, they are very welcoming to new and creative ideas and they just might have it on your next visit!

Hundreds of creative flavors can be found all over the world. A few that I found interesting from other countries are as follows:

  • Spaghetti & Cheese Ice Cream from Venezuela
  • Spleen & Artichoke Ice Cream from Italy
  • Octopus Ice Cream from Japan
  • Goat Ice Cream from Asia
  • Caviar Ice Cream from France
  • Chili Pepper Ice Cream from Singapore
  • And much more bizarre flavors.

Many of these flavors may not be appealing too most; however, these are delicacies in many countries. Whatever your preference, get out this summer season and treat yourself to some ice cream. Also, if you really want to splurge, go to NYC for a $25,000 sundae! The sundae includes 28 cocoas that are infused with five grams of edible 23-karat gold and served in a goblet lined with edible gold. The customers also get to keep an 18-karat gold bracelet with diamonds and the gold and diamond-crusted spoon and goblet set.

Backpacking Through Chile

Posted on: May 16th, 2011 by designdesign

I recently took a trip to the beautiful country of Chile to backpack with my best friend. We traveled over 4,000 miles of the country by foot, bus, car, and plane. We spent our week sightseeing, enjoying local cuisine, meeting other travelers, sleeping in hostels, and hiking. The highlight of the trip was spending two days in Patagonia, where we saw penguins, glaciers, waterfalls, caves, mountains, and lakes the color of Tiffany’s blue.

One of the things that Chile is best known for is their wine. Interestingly enough, Chile was not able to start producing wine until the last 1980’s due to politics. The climate is perfect for wine growing in the 2,700 mile long country, since the land is fertile and the air is bug free. In 1995, Chile had 12 different wineries, and now today there are over 120. They are the 5th largest exporter of wine in the world, and the 9th biggest producer. The most common grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and my personal (new) favorite, the Carmenere.

Not only was I impressed with the wine, but also with the design of the logos and bottles. I selected several that I really liked due to their hand drawn quality. I really like the fluidity of the drawings, and how it is reminiscent of wine.

My best friend is now teaching English in Chile for the next two years, so hopefully I will have another opportunity to experience the landscape and wine of Chile again soon!
