The Spyder3Elite™ was to be a 3rd-generation monitor calibration device for colorimeter industry leader Datacolor.
To accurately match color with unparalleled precision, the new design needed to incorporate a state-of-the-art 7 detector color engine to increase light sensitivity by 400%, while reducing the overall size of the device by 37%. An ambient light sensor also had to be added to intelligently calibrate color independent of lighting conditions.
DesignDesign was tasked with creating an emotionally compelling design for the Spyder3Elite worthy of desktop display, with the flexibility to interface with both computer and home theater panels and projectors. The look had to be fresh and high-tech, while remaining true to the iconic Spyder form factor.

Concept Development:
First, sketches were generated using underlays of the device’s internal components.

Concurrently, we designed a versatile test rig to optimize the placement of optic components and determine critical geometry. The test rig design parameters were established in sketch form before going into CAD.

The chosen concept was refined through sculpted 3D sketch development and foam models.

DesignDesign then generated a SolidWorks model of the test rig and made engineering prototypes for Datacolor’s R&D team to test.

Color and finish of the device were investigated through renderings to determine the most impactful aesthetic.

CAD models were created based on the optimized optics parameters established by the test rig. These parts were then engineered and designed for manufacture and assembly.

An SLA prototype was produced to confirm the fit and function of all parts, and samples of chrome and soft touch finishes were generated for consideration of each option.

The preferred color breakups were then applied to prototypes for a final evaluation of the most effective aesthetic for production.

Spyder3Elite logo options were developed then applied to the device for final selection of style and placement.

First article production parts were reviewed to assess the assembly tolerance of the injection-molded parts.

Conclusion:
DesignDesign has created a clean, sweeping, muscular design for the Spyder3Elite that is striking in appearance while still identifiable with the Spyder family of products. The subtle details bridge the gap between organic and geometric form language, and the sophisticated finishes build on the perceived quality. In stores now, the Spyder3Elite’s superior technology matched with the product’s unique and original form factor is helping Datacolor retain its control in the industry, while setting new standards in the colorimeter market worldwide.
